What does a newborn baby need?

The first three months after birth are usually called the fourth trimester. The infant, who has lived nine months in a warm and safe place close to the mother's heartbeat, will now get acquainted with a new big world. A recommendation is therefore to have the baby skin-to-skin as much as possible so that your newborn baby’s need for closeness is satisfied. We at Geggamoja think that a baby wrap is a real lifesaver during the first period. It may be that the baby does not want to sleep at all in the cozy crib you have arranged so nicely. Then instead let the newborn lie close or maybe even on a parent where the warmth and heartbeats are.

Since you are reading this guide, we believe you are expecting or have recently had an addition to the family - congratulations! Even though you cannot predict the new family member’s behavior and wishes, it is nice that some things are in place when the family grows, mainly to avoid having to arrange everything when the baby has just been welcomed into the world. We at Geggamoja obviously want to help you on the way to getting to know and take care of the family’s new addition. As a helping hand, this guide highlights what we believe a newborn baby needs.

Clothing tips & advice

Of course, your newborn must have clothes. Feel free to check out our checklist further down for guidance on what kinds of garments and the amount of clothes needed to buy for your baby. Focus especially on soft and organic materials, but also think practically and choose what you like in terms of quality and design.

We at Geggamoja love and can strongly recommend our bamboo pajamas. They are incredibly soft, while bamboo is a natural material without chemicals that is perfect for the baby’s skin. The most popular and smart feature of our zip pajamas is its two-way zipper, a convenient solution that simplifies diaper changes. During the first period, many also prefer to use a wrap-style bodysuit. This is mainly to avoid pulling the garment over the newborn baby’s head. Outdoors, the child should have a hat or sun hat on the head to protect against cold and sun - preferably throughout the entire first year!

What size should I buy for my newborn baby?

You never know how small or big the baby is when it is born. We have premature clothes for premature or very small children from size 40. Otherwise, we generally recommend size 50/56 for newborns. Geggamoja’s clothes are true to size or tend to be somewhat roomy in size.

Baby Carriage

The baby carriage is a place where you want your little one to feel comfortable and cozy. Therefore, make sure to line it and make it snug or use a comfortable footmuff in the baby carriage. Then complement it with a lovely blanket and a soft toy or hanging ornament to make the baby carriage both personal and recognizable for the baby's senses. Having items that smell familiar and accompany you in daily life makes the little one feel safe – but remember to choose durable products of high quality.

We also recommend investing in one of our UV curtains. Such a curtain is good to use on summer days when the sun’s rays find their way into the baby carriage. Generally, it is important that the child does not become too warm or cold in the baby carriage. A tip is to feel the child’s neck to determine body temperature. If it is warm and humid in the baby carriage, usually one layer needs to be removed from the baby.

Changing Table

Another place you will spend a lot of time at is the changing area. Give this place a cozy and personal touch as well. For example, by hanging a mobile for the baby to look at or with a soft toy that can keep the baby company during diaper changes. A quality changing pad that can withstand accidents can be good to invest in. NOTE! Never leave your infant unattended on the changing table.

Bed

Did you know that a child sleeps about 50–70% of the first six to seven years of life? It is therefore important that your child feels comfortable in their sleeping place. Using a baby nest gives the baby a sleeping place that is safe and secure. Sleep is not only important for children during the first years but also for you as a new parent. Therefore, make sure the sleeping place feels cozy for the whole family. For example, with our cuddly blankets made of organic material that you can easily take with you from the bed to the carriage or snuggle up with during cozy moments on the sofa.

We at Geggamoja hope you have found support in this guide and find some new favorites in our range. We wish you the best of luck with the new family member. Take care of yourselves! ❤
