Outerwear - common terms
To determine which outerwear is suitable for the desired play and activities, people often refer to a garment's water column rating, breathability, waterproofness, and water-repellent properties. Water-repellent/waterproof clothing is measured by its water column rating (WP) and breathability (BR). Which outerwear you should choose therefore depends on the context and purpose for which your child will use the garment.
Water column rating
A water column rating is a way of measuring the degree of waterproofness of a garment. This helps us understand the garment's ability to keep water from penetrating and, based on this, choose the right garment for the right activity. In practice, a narrow tube is placed on the outside of the garment (outdoor clothing) and then filled with water until water begins to seep through the material. If a garment is said to withstand a water column of 15,000 mm, this means that the garment can withstand a 15,000 mm (15 m) high tube filled with water pressing against the garment without water penetrating the outer garment.
General guidelines for water column ratings in outerwear:
6000 - 10 000 mm = Heavy rain for a short time.
11 000 - 15 000 mm = Heavy rain for a few hours or moderate rain for a full day.
16 000 - 20 000 mm = Heavy rain or wet snow.
20 000 mm -> = Continuous rain under high pressure. This refers to garments whose sole function is to withstand heavy rain. The garment is therefore not breathable at all.
Breathability
Breathability is a way of measuring how many grams of moisture a garment can release per square metre over a 24-hour period.
The more waterproof a garment is, the poorer its breathability.
