What is a sleeping bag?

A sleeping bag is a garment that a baby wears when they are going to sleep/rest. It looks like pajamas with short or long sleeves and has a wide opening at the bottom. A sleeping bag can be used instead of a blanket or quilt when your baby is going to sleep. A baby sleeping bag is a safe alternative to a blanket or quilt for small children.

Benefits of using a sleeping bag

  • A sleeping bag helps your baby maintain a good and even body temperature throughout the night. This is mainly because your baby cannot kick it off.
  • You don’t need to have any blanket or quilt lying in the bed. This means you don’t have to worry about your child getting tangled up and having the blanket over their face.
  • You don’t need to worry about your child getting cold.
  • A sleeping bag makes diaper changes easier. We have both sleeping bags with elastic at the bottom and those with a zipper at the front and snap buttons at the bottom, so you don’t have to wake your child when it’s time for a diaper change.
  • It’s easy to move freely without, for example, a blanket getting in the way.
  • A sleeping bag contributes to a cozier and safer sleep time because the sleeping bag embraces your child.

What does TOG value mean?

In this guide, we also explain the TOG value of sleeping bags and how to choose the right level for your baby.

TOG value is a unit of measurement used to describe the insulation level or thermal efficiency of sleeping bags and quilts. This system is mainly used in countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The TOG value is measured in the unit "TOG" and ranges from 2 to 15 or more, with higher TOG values indicating better insulation and thus more warmth. Here is a general guide to understanding TOG values:

  • Low TOG value (for example, 1.0 TOG or lower): Suitable for warm and summer nights. These sleeping bags or quilts have less insulation and are suitable for warm climates or warm indoor environments.
  • Medium TOG value (approximately 1.0 to 2.5 TOG): Suitable for spring and autumn when temperatures are mild to cool. These sleeping bags provide moderate insulation and warmth.
  • High TOG value (3 TOG or higher): Ideal for cold winter months and cold climates. These sleeping bags or quilts offer a lot of insulation and warmth.

TOG value in Geggamoja’s sleeping bags

Geggamoja’s sleeping bags come in different TOG values, indicating how much warmth the product provides.

Our unpadded sleeping bags have a TOG value of 0.3–0.4.

This means they provide very light warmth and function more like pajamas than a blanket. They are intended to be used at normal room temperature and warmer, and the child’s other nightwear (baby sleepwear) should always be adjusted according to the room temperature.

For autumn and winter, we offer padded sleeping bags with a TOG value of 2.0.

These provide more warmth and are suitable for normal to cooler room temperatures and can also be used in cooler rooms (down to about 15–18 °C) depending on what the child is wearing under the sleeping bag. The child’s clothing should always be adapted to the temperature and individual needs.

Tips:

The TOG value is a guideline. The child’s age, mobility, sleeping environment, and room temperature always affect which clothing is most appropriate.

How long can a baby use a sleeping bag?

Geggamoja’s sleeping bags can be used by your baby from newborn until your child is 18 months old. During the baby’s first year, we recommend that the child sleeps in a sleeping bag to reduce the risk of having the blanket over the face and head. A sleeping bag is perfect to use in the stroller, crib, or as an extra layer over a bodysuit and a pair of baby pants for extra warmth and a cozy feeling.
